Before we examine a single tooth

We look beyond your teeth, because important findings can be elsewhere.

We begin with the structures around your mouth and the soft tissues within it, looking for jaw concerns and changes that deserve closer attention.

Extraoral examination

Your jaw, joints and supporting muscles

We assess the temporomandibular joints, masseter, temporalis and supporting muscles for tenderness, symmetry and function.

Intraoral examination

Soft tissues that deserve equal attention

We examine the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, palate, gums and other soft tissues for changes that should be monitored or investigated.

A more detailed examination

Fine detail brought into clearer view.

Using Admetec dental loupes with at least 5× magnification and wireless Butterfly illumination, we examine your teeth and gums in detail, assess your bite, review existing dental work and look for risks that may affect your oral health over time.

A closer look with DIAGNOcam

The best time to notice a problem is before you can feel it.

DIAGNOcam uses near-infrared light rather than X-ray radiation to add a view through the tooth. It can reveal early changes on the mesial and distal surfaces between neighbouring teeth and lets you see what we are monitoring. It does not replace X-rays when they are clinically indicated.

Why this matters
Small insight now. Potentially less treatment later.

Early preventive care and monitoring may sometimes help stop or slow progression before a filling is needed.

A possible drill-free option. When clinically appropriate, Icon Proximal resin infiltration can seal certain early lesions between teeth and help stop them progressing into a larger problem.

Only when clinically indicated

Digital X-rays where they add useful information.

Digital bitewing X-rays can show areas that cannot be assessed by sight alone. They are included only when clinically indicated, not automatically at every visit.

  • Suitable recent records are considered first.
  • Pregnancy and other contraindications are considered.
  • Your clinician explains why an image is recommended before it is taken.

Make plaque visible

Personal guidance, based on what we can both see.

Curaprox Plaquefinder PCA 223 turns difficult-to-see plaque into a pink-and-blue map that guides both your home care and our clean.

A clean you can see and feel

Our gold-standard clean, with a purpose behind every step.

The plaque map guides the clean. Then premium air polishing, fine-tip ultrasonic scaling and carefully maintained hand instruments work together to leave fewer places unchecked.

FLASH pearl uses fine calcium-carbonate particles that do not dissolve easily in water. The manufacturer describes their spherical 54 µm form as effective for removing plaque, stubborn staining and even light calculus, with less likelihood of surface damage than sharper-edged conventional sodium bicarbonate powder.

    Fine-tip ultrasonic scaling

A fine periodontal ultrasonic tip helps reach calculus beneath the gumline while minimising unnecessary pressure.

  3. 03

    Precision hand scale

Fine hand instrumentation checks for and removes deposits that remain.

Care over speed

Our very fine periodontal ultrasonic tip is designed to reach calculus beneath the gumline. Its slender profile helps us work delicately around teeth and gums, minimising unnecessary pressure and discomfort.

The finer tip can take a little longer, and we believe the extra time is worthwhile for a deeper, more considered clean.

The protective finish

Fluoride treatment to support your enamel.

After the clean, fluoride is applied when appropriate to support enamel. Your clinician adapts this stage to your individual needs and explains any after-care.

08 / 08

Clarity before you leave

You leave knowing where you stand and what happens next.

We explain the findings, options and costs in plain language, including prevention and monitoring. Treatment is generally booked separately, with a further consultation when more discussion is helpful.

No awkward questions

Everything you may want to know before you book.

What is included in the new-patient appointment?

The new-patient offer includes an extraoral assessment of the jaw joints and supporting muscles, an intraoral soft-tissue examination, a detailed examination of your teeth, gums and existing work using magnification, DIAGNOcam imaging, personalised oral-hygiene coaching using two-tone plaque-disclosing tablets, a scale and clean with Prophy-Mate air polishing and premium FLASH pearl powder, fluoride treatment, and a clear treatment-plan discussion. Digital X-rays are included when clinically indicated. Suitable recent records, pregnancy and other contraindications are considered before imaging. Your clinician will adapt the appointment to your individual needs.

What will I pay and how does health cover work?

Eligible new patients with applicable dental cover may have no out-of-pocket cost for the included first-visit services. Health-fund limits, waiting periods, available benefits and other fund conditions apply. Patients without eligible cover can access the $200 new-patient fee. Please confirm eligibility when booking.

What if I am anxious or it has been a long time?

You are welcome, and you will be met without judgement. Please tell us when you book or arrive so we can move at a comfortable pace and explain each step clearly. On request, nitrous oxide sedation is available at an additional cost when clinically appropriate. Your clinician will discuss whether it is suitable for you and confirm the fee before it is provided.

Will I be pressured into treatment?

No. We almost never carry out treatment during a new-patient examination. The visit is primarily for careful assessment, explanation and planning. You will receive a clear treatment plan, with a further consultation appointment when more discussion is helpful. You can then decide what you would like us to do and book a separate appointment for that treatment. Same-day treatment is uncommon and is considered only when you specifically request it, it is clinically appropriate and sufficient time is available.

Can I book on a weekend?

Yes. Balmoral Dental Centre is open seven days, with appointments from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and public holidays closed. There is no surcharge for Saturday or Sunday appointments. A weekend booking deposit applies to secure your appointment; the team will confirm the amount and applicable terms before you book. Appointment availability varies.

Is the clinic accessible and where can I park?

Yes. A lift provides access to the surgery, and there are four parking spaces dedicated to Balmoral Dental Centre patients. For the easiest arrival, enter via Riddell Street.
